World Faiths
The Study of other Faiths at St. Simon's
"Works of love are always to accept and respect others."
Saint Teresa of Calcutta
“ The need of the moment is not one religion, but mutual respect and tolerance of the devotees of the different religions.”
Mahatma Gandhi
In St. Simon's, in line with the 2012 Religious Education Curriculum Directory in teaching other Faiths we aim to:
· To raise pupils’ awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them;
· To bring clarity to the relationship between faith and life, and between faith and culture.
The content to be covered should enable children to develop skills such as: recognise, retell, describe, explain and ask questions about Celebrations of the faith and the ways the people of other faiths live their lives.
EYFS/ Reception will focus on the different cultures/religions within their class/ school and KS1 will study Judaism.
In KS 2, Year 3 will study Hinduism; Year 4 Sikhism; Year 5 Islam and Year 6 Buddhism.
In the study of each of these other Faiths opportunities must be create for pupils to give reasons for/why, show understanding of/about, make links with, engage and respond to:
· The writings and holy people of the faith.
· Celebrations of the religion and appreciation that prayer has a place for their followers.
· Ways in which care for others is important for the other faiths.
· The practice and significance of prayer in the other faiths.
